Students at our Long Island Campus explore why our criminal justice system operates the way it does. They examine the role of law enforcement agencies, courts, correctional agencies and private agencies that aid in the prevention and control of crime and delinquency.
Our criminal justice department and club have sponsored a myriad of interesting events and trips, such as hosting exonerees from the Innocence Project, trips to Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia and a trip to Germany to visit their progressive prisons.

In addition, each senior completes an internship to apply classroom theories and procedures in such settings as New York metropolitan area law firms, research organizations, the NYPD, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, NYC’s Department of Correction and other government agencies. We also offer other experiential learning and study abroad opportunities.

The dynamic, multidisciplinary criminal justice degree at St. Joseph’s engages students in a number of areas, including sociology, political science, psychology, philosophy, forensic bioscience and criminal justice. The criminal justice program offers specialized classes in the field within a broad liberal arts curriculum, and graduates emerge with the critical thinking skills, reflective world view and career flexibility to pursue graduate studies or enter the job market. Unlike other programs, the degree focuses more on evidence-based practices known to be effective in the field, criminal justice policy analysis to assess alternative responses to crime and quantitative applications — all of which are essential skills for the advancing professional. Our criminal justice majors can explore careers as law enforcement officers, correction officers, social workers, counselors, investigators, and probation and parole officers. Some study law and become prosecutors and defense attorneys.
