Journalism and New Media Studies

Journalism and New Media Studies

The Journalism and New Media Studies major draws on traditional liberal arts disciplines — including English, history and communications — and applies them to professional media practices. Students develop their writing and reporting skills for new media formats such as interactive websites and digital video.

The program has a strong focus on the business side of media, leading to internships at established media outlets (e.g., newspapers, magazines, and television and radio stations). Recent internship sites have included ABC 7, CBS Sports, Democracy Now! and BK Nation. Recent workshops on campus have been conducted in collaboration with NBC News and WNYC.

In reporting local stories, students explore the inner workings of their own communities. Majors showcase their multimedia skills and interests in their senior projects. Graduates are prepared to pursue a wide range of positions: print, Web and television journalism, film and television production, public relations, nonprofit communications, marketing and advertising.
