If you're seeking a program that will both inspire and equip you for a rewarding career as an effective classroom teacher and literacy specialist, the M.A. in Literacy and Cognition All Grades at St. Joseph's University, New York is the perfect choice. The program leads to full pre-kindergarten through Grade 12 certification and offers exceptional preparation focused on the science of reading and evidenced based practices, including an emphasis on Structured Literacy. Our graduates will also develop the knowledge and skills necessary to identify the signs of dyslexia and provide effective interventions.

Our faculty understands the challenges teachers face in meeting the literacy needs of students, and our 36-credit program, encompassing over 50 hours of interaction with young learners, aims to help our graduates develop evidence-based methods of providing effective literacy instruction for a diverse population.

Many of our students become literacy coaches, specialists, supervisors and administrators. St. Joseph’s students who earn an M.A. in Literacy and Cognition All Grades can complete the School Building or School District Leader advanced certificates or an M.A. in Educational Leadership with Critical Consciousness at accelerated rates.

The Long Island M.A. in Literacy Experience

Ready for Anything: Students will gain 50 hours of hands-on experience and be fully certified as literacy teachers (Pre-kindergarten – 12th grade) upon graduation and the successful completion of the NYSTCE Literacy CST.


Small Class Experience: The program features small classes and a blend of online and in-person courses with professors who are supportive and dedicated.


Be in Demand: About 37 percent of fourth-grade students performed below the NAEP Basic level in reading in 2022. Knowledgeable teachers of reading are an essential component to addressing this national educational crisis. 


Flexible Online Schedule

Students have the flexibility of coursework which is delivered both on campus or online in a synchronous format, enabling students to learn and collaborate from anywhere. The option of different formats provides students the opportunity to suit their schedule and their preferred instructional format.
