HTM Students Participate in Annual Orientation Tour to Fire Island

October 23, 2014

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – October 23, 2014 – A group of St. Joseph’s College (SJC) students who are majoring in hospitality and tourism management (HTM) recently participated in a field trip to Sailors Haven and Cherry Grove in Fire Island, New York. The trip was sponsored by the Friends of Fire Island National Seashore (FFINS), a not-for-profit organization that works to preserve the natural beauty and history of the Fire Island Seashore.

Led by Janice Scarinci, Ph.D., director of the Institute for Hospitality and Tourism Management and chair of the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management at SJC, Renee Kantro, assistant to the dean and moderator of the FFINS student chapter of SJC, Fire Island National Park Rangers and FFINS members, students from SJC and Stony Brook University were able to collect and study a variety of sea life, trail through Sunken Forest, visit the community of Cherry Grove and learn an abundance of Fire Island history.

“Having an official FFINS student chapter on SJC’s Long Island Campus has given our students an opportunity to represent the College as environmental ambassadors and demonstrate our commitment to fostering proper stewardship and responsible tourism,” said Kantro. “FFINS aligns itself well with the goals of our HTM program and has allowed us to introduce our students to a whole new venue of people.”

SJC’s HTM program offers three distinct areas of concentration—Tourism, Hotel Management and Health Care Hospitality—with an emphasis on ecological concerns (eco-tourism and agri-tourism), integration of hotel management with sustainability at its core, and the principles of hospitality, especially as they relate to patient care in medical and non-profit environments. The program also provides students with unique internship opportunities, giving them practical experience in their chosen fields before they graduate.
