ST. JOSEPH’S PRESIDENT BOOMGAARDEN NAMED TO 2023 BROOKLYN POWER LIST

January 17, 2023

BROOKLYN and PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – January 17, 2023 – St. Joseph’s University, New York (SJNY) is pleased to announce that President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., has been named to the Schneps Media 2023 Brooklyn Power List and will be recognized at an awards gala on Thursday, January 26 at El Caribe Country Club Caterers in Brooklyn.

For more than 20 years, Schneps Media has named the most influential individuals in the region to their Brooklyn Power List. The annual list recognizes these honorees for their commitment, impact and influence in the community. Among some of this year’s most influential Brooklynites are NYC Mayor the Hon. Eric Adams, NYS Attorney General the Hon. Leticia James, Kingsborough Community College President Dr. Claudia V. Schrader, Long Island University President Dr. Kimberly Cline and Brooklyn District Attorney the Hon. Eric Gonzalez.

“I am honored to be recognized among so many influential and impressive individuals on the Brooklyn Power List, and to have the opportunity to serve the Brooklyn community as president of St. Joseph’s University, New York,” said St. Joseph’s President Dr. Boomgaarden. “I congratulate my fellow honorees and commend them for the positive impacts they are making in the community.”

Dr. Boomgaarden is the eighth president of St. Joseph's University, New York (formerly known as St. Joseph’s College). Dr. Boomgaarden most recently oversaw an historical designation change from College to University — a status granted by the New York State Department of Education and New York State Board of Regents in April 2022. He has also been at the forefront of a successful reaccreditation with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the launch of two consecutive strategic plans, grown the University’s endowment by nearly 50 percent and saw record high enrollments on all three campuses — Brooklyn, Long Island and Online.

Dr. Boomgaarden’s commitment to the University’s mission is evident in the meaningful initiatives he continues to move forward. Under his leadership, the University is currently adding new academic programs, making improvements to its physical campuses and constructing a state-of-the-art multi-million dollar student center on its Patchogue campus. He also makes frequent media appearances as an industry leader in higher education.

Dr. Boomgaarden serves on the board of trustees for the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU); is Board Chair of the Association of Colleges of Sisters of St. Joseph (ACSSJ), a national organization of colleges and universities across the nation; a steering committee member of the Long Island Regional Advisory Council on Higher Education (LIRACHE), where he is also chair to the Superintendents and College President’s Partnership; and is chair of the Lower Hudson Valley Consortium of Catholic Colleges and Universities.

A concert pianist and country fiddler, Dr. Boomgaarden is also a noted historian of opera, music aesthetics and harmonic theory. He teaches classes in the areas of North American Roots music and on the history of opera, and his writings include his book on the interrelationships between philosophy and music, "Musical Thought in Eighteenth-Century Britain and Germany," and articles in "The New Grove Dictionary" and "The New Grove Dictionary of Opera," as well as the "British Dictionary of National Biography.”
