SJC Receives Donations for Victims of Hurricane Sandy

November 26, 2012

PATCHOGUE AND BROOKLYN, NY NOVEMBER 27, 2012 In the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, St. Josephs College (SJC) has focused its efforts on immediately helping students and the community who were greatly affected by the tremendous amount of damage left in the wake of the hurricane.

The College has created a Hurricane Sandy Student Relief Fund to ensure that students will continue their studies at SJC. "The Hurricane Sandy Student Relief Fund was created to help current students who were most severely affected by the storm, said SJC President S. Elizabeth Hill. "The goal of the Student Relief Fund is to ensure that no student is forced to forfeit his or her education due to the financial impact of this disaster. All proceeds from the Student Relief Fund go toward helping SJC students stay in school.

Lessings, a sixth generation, family owned and operated food service leader on Long Island, has donated $750 worth of $5 meal cards to provide students in need with meals on the Long Island Campus. An estimated $800 in goods and services was donated by Evodios Cafeteria on the Colleges Brooklyn Campus. In addition, Barnes & Noble, the Colleges on-campus bookstore, has offered $5,000 worth of gift cards to replace students textbooks and supplies that were damaged during the storm.

From November 6 -11, the American Red Cross established a community shelter on the Colleges Long Island Campus. Local restaurants generously donated hot meals to its occupants, with dinners from Mama Lombardis, the Mediterranean Manor, Perabell, Public House 49, Tap Room and Village Idiot Pub. Other locations that agreed to send food, before the shelter was relocated, included Bobbique, the Burger Shack, Rudis and Tropical Smoothie Caf.
