SJC Brooklyn’s Hill Center Awarded Prestigious Green Building Certification

February 11, 2016

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – February 11, 2016 - SJC Brooklyn is pleased to announce that The Hill Center has been LEED Gold-certified. The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance.

"We are delighted that the Hill Center is LEED-certified to the Gold level," said SJC President Jack P. Calareso, Ph.D. "From the drafting of the initial plans, we sought to ensure that The Hill Center would have as minimal of an environmental impact as possible. This recognition confirms our success in accomplishing that goal and serves as an example of our commitment to sustainability as an institution."

The Hill Center—named after the College’s sixth president, S. Elizabeth A. Hill, C.S.J., J.D.,—the 40,000 square-foot athletic facility is the first new building constructed at SJC Brooklyn since 1965. Along with a 270-seat NCAA-regulation basketball and volleyball court and full cardiovascular and weight training rooms, the facility houses conference rooms, a dance studio, an outdoor terrace overlooking Vanderbilt Avenue, a fully-equipped sports medicine suite and a 90-car underground parking garage.

The Hill Center achieved LEED certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. LEED is the foremost program for the design, construction and operation of green buildings, comprising more than 1.85 million square feet of construction space in all 50 states and more than 150 countries.
