Brooklyn Voices Presents Pultizer Prize Winner Jhumpa Lahiri

September 25, 2013

BROOKLYN, N.Y. September 26, 2013 St. Josephs College (SJC) is pleased to announce that Pulitzer Prize winner Jhumpa Lahiri will present the first talk of this falls Brooklyn Voices lecture series on Friday, October 4 at 7:30 p.m. This event, created in partnership with Greenlight Bookstore and the Brooklyn Rail, will take place in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium on SJCs Brooklyn Campus.

A long-time resident of Fort Greene, Ms. Lahiri will discuss her latest work, The Lowland, with writer John Burnham Schwartz. The Lowland is a tale of two brothers in India whose lives diverge as they embark on adulthood in the 1960s. While one heads to the United States to study oceanography, the other remains in Calcutta and sinks into the violence of the Naxalite movement. The emotional and physical distance between these once inseparable brothers is palpable, but a yet more powerful linkthat of family loyaltyremains cemented between them until the end.

Jhumpa Lahiri is the author of three previous works of fiction: Interpreter of Maladies, The Namesake and, most recently, Unaccustomed Earth. A recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, a PEN/Hemingway Award, the Frank OConnor International Short Story Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship, she was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2012.

The Brooklyn Voices lecture series at SJC is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Michael Banach at 718.940.5584 or email [email protected]. Tuohy Hall is located at 245 Clinton Avenue in Brooklyn, N.Y.
