St. Joseph's University’s philosophy courses provide an excellent foundation for professional study in law, history, education, the natural and social sciences and religious studies. Our program challenges students to think critically while studying a history of ideas and various perspectives.
Philosophy, the love of wisdom, is at the heart of a liberal arts education. It questions and interprets a full range of human experiences while analytically examining the assumptions, methods and claims of other bodies of knowledge represented in the curriculum, including its own.
RELIGIOUS STUDIES AND PHILOSOPHY PROGRAM
Many of our religious studies and philosophy courses can count toward the core as well as toward the major. All 100 and 200-level courses and, with advisement from the department, students are encouraged to select various courses numbered 300-349.
PHILOSOPHY MINOR
An 18-credit philosophy minor is offered at the Long Island Campus. PHI 123 and PHI 124 are required, along with 12 credits chosen from the course offerings (9 must be above the 100 level).
PHILOSOPHY CHILD STUDY CONCENTRATION
A philosophy concentration was recently added to the B.A. in Child Study degree program leading to a teaching certification on the Long Island Campus.
