Ready yourself to make a profound difference in the lives of others with a Master of Arts in Mathematics Special Education. Our 36-credit M.A. program on the Long Island campus is designed to prepare students to become accomplished mathematics teachers with a background in educating students with disabilities.
The Mathematics Special Education program at St. Joseph’s University, New York is about gaining a deeper understanding of what it means to be a teaching professional with a desire to become a life-long learner.
By extending the depth and breadth of mathematical skills learned at the undergraduate level, SJNY’s M.A. program equips teaching professionals with the skills to motivate and engage a diverse population of students with various cognitive abilities and learning styles.
Our program meets the standards set by New York State and the National Council of Teachers and Mathematics. Courses in Special Education are specifically directed to the New York State P-12 Learning Standards and the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) standards.
The Mathematics Special Education M.A. program at SJNY includes courses in research, assessment, adaptive and alternative teaching methods, strategies for understanding, using research-based instruction and designing behavioral plans. Particular attention is paid to integrating technology with the teaching of mathematics.
Through our strong research component, students are exposed to the theory and practice of several distinct areas, such as assessment, inclusion of family, psychological and social characteristics, and support for students with physical impairments.
Our program is committed to addressing the challenges of teachers in special education, creating leaders in the field and advancing the principles set forth by the Council for Exceptional Children.
Candidates for this program will be eligible for initial certification to teach special education. Completion of the program also satisfies the degree requirements for professional certification to teach mathematics in New York State.
