SJC Long Island Professor Honored by WHPDC

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – November 18, 2015 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that Peter Barnett, M. Div., senior lecturer of religious studies at SJC Long Island, was recently honored at the Wyandanch Homes and Property Development Corporation’s (WHPDC) 30th Anniversary Celebration on Tuesday, November 10 at the Venetian Yacht Club in Babylon.

“As the founder and former executive director of Wyandanch Homes, I was very pleased to be honored at the 30th Anniversary Celebration,” said Barnett. “I sincerely thank my wife, Judith, and Father John Cervini for all of their support and encouragement throughout the years.”

For more than 30 years, Barnett has been actively involved in numerous organizations on Long Island that aim to help the homeless population. Barnett founded Wyandanch Homes and the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless to give a voice to people in need. Funds raised by both organizations directly benefit homeless families. In recognition of his work, Barnett was SJC Long Island’s 2010 Commencement speaker.  

Also recognized at WHPDC’s event were Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Babylon Town Supervisor Richard Schaffer and Russell Albanese, chairman of the Albanese Organization, Inc. Father John Cervini, Eileen Jacoby and William Eddy (posthumously), received special recognition at the event. 

WHPDC was created in 1985 to alleviate a severe housing shortage for low income families living in Wyandanch and other impacted Suffolk County communities. The core objective of WHPDC is to rebuild both communities and families by providing them with stable housing and supportive services, which enable them to achieve economic self- sufficiency.
