LI Campus to Host Lecture on Border Crisis

November 13, 2014

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – NOVEMBER 13, 2014 – The Department of Psychology at St. Joseph’s College (SJC) will host a lecture titled, “I Want to Live! Children on the Run,” with Roy Aranda, Psy.D., J.D., on Thursday, December 4 at 5:30 p.m. in the Shea Conference Room on the College’s Long Island Campus in Patchogue, New York.

Dr. Aranda is an accomplished psychologist and member of the New York State Psychological Association. His lecture will discuss the recent increase in U.S. border crossings of unaccompanied children and will focus on the challenges, emotional trauma and consequences that they face during their journey.

“It is hard to imagine the challenges that drive a child's decision to flee their family and native country in the hopes of finding a safer and more secure future in the U.S.,” said Diane Sherlip, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at SJC. “We are fortunate to have Dr. Aranda share his expertise on this critical issue that is affecting so many people.”

Last month, more than 68,000 children were caught crossing the U.S. border alone, with the majority traveling from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. Plagued by rampant violence, drug trafficking and human rights violations in their native countries, many fugitives are victimized along the way, and many arrive in the U.S. suffering from various illnesses.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Diane Sherlip at [email protected] or 631.687.2683.
