All department representatives, Executive Committee members and faculty supervisors of course-based student research must read and comprehend the ethical principles applicable to research with human subjects contained in the following sources:
- IRB Mission Statement, Board Structure, and Regulations and Procedures.
- Parts 46.107 through 46.117 of the Code of Federal Regulations for the Protection of Human Subjects (HHS)
- The Belmont Report: Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects of Research (HEW)
In addition, all individuals noted above must obtain a certificate of completion from the Protecting Human Research Participants (PHRP) online training program. Currently, there are two (2) different certifications. Researchers engaged in social, behavioral, and educational research should complete the PHRP SBER course. Researchers whose emphasis is on biomedical research should complete the PHRP course.
After reading these materials and completing the training program, individuals must complete and submit to the IRB chair the IRB Training Declaration Form, the IRB Ethics Assurance Form (for faculty teaching research courses), and a copy of PHRP SBER / PHRP certificate of completion. All forms and certifications are valid for three (3) years.
