Responsible for developing and implementing an ongoing program of activities that promote the social, emotional, cognitive and physical development of each child enrolled in a group.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education; NYS Early Childhood certification; Master’s degree preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Adheres to daily 8:15am – 3:15pm schedule, as well as attendance and vacation procedures.
  • Sets up and maintains a well-organized, safe, and attractive classroom environment conducive to the optimal growth and development of children.
  • Has the ability to sit on the floor with children or around small tables where group time or activities are held.
  • Accompanies and supervises the children outside in all-weather deemed acceptable.
  • Sets up outdoor area, including tricycles, scooters, etc., when scheduled.
  • Assists the children with toileting as necessary.
  • Participates in the safe and satisfactory maintenance of the classroom and school.
  • Attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings provided at the Center. 
  • Implements effective CS 210 sessions with enrolled college students, provides effective supervision to these same students, and fulfills SJNY paperwork obligations, including but not limited to submitting grades in a timely fashion.
  • Develops a positive relationship with each child and promotes the development of self-esteem and self-discipline.
  • Observes each child daily to assess skills, interests and needs, and uses this information to facilitate learning and growth.
  • Maintains records on each child’s progress and development for the purpose of planning and compliance, and to document the growth of children.
  • Works with classroom staff to plan and implement the daily program of activities based on principles of child development, New York State Early Childhood standards, and in accordance with the program’s curriculum.
  • Meets bi-weekly with the Director and Assistant Director to review curriculum plans and activities and evaluate program’s effectiveness. In the case of the teachers in classroom 1, they must also meet regularly with the Special Education Coordinator.
  • Meets regularly with Assistant Teacher(s) assigned to the classroom to collaboratively develop weekly plans and activities. In the case of classroom 1, the head teacher must also collaborate with the other head teacher assigned to this room.
  • Provides day-to-day supervision and support to Assistant Teacher(s), college work-study students, substitutes and volunteers, which include sharing daily program plans and discussing goals for children.
  • Works collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team to fully implement an IEP for children with disabilities, if applicable.
  • Implements performance standards, policies and procedures, regulations and guidelines in the day to-day operation of an early childhood development center (2 years-5 years of age), including developmentally appropriate practices for a pre-school program.
  • Assists with the implementation of developmental, behavioral, and sensory screenings mandated by regulations and performance standards, if applicable.
  • Promotes effective communication between the classroom team and the Director/Assistant Director.
  • Works with Class Parent(s) in planning and participating in parent activities.
  • Conducts effective parent-teacher conferences at least twice per school year to discuss each child’s growth and development.
  • Establishes a positive relationship with each child’s family and shares information about the child’s day at the Center.
  • Helps parents to understand the curriculum and finds ways to involve parents in the daily program.
  • Completes recommendation forms for other schools in a timely fashion.
  • Creates and maintains a DOH Aspire profile.
  • Complies with all college, city and state regulations regarding submission of health forms and incident reports; follows emergency procedure guidelines.
  • Attends the Parent Social and at least two of the three Dillon fundraisers: the Holiday Fair, the Auction and SUNFEST.
