Bio

Michael Hanophy joined the faculty in 1999. Prior to coming to St. Joseph’s University, New York, he had taught biology in high school and at the College of New Rochelle. At St. Joseph's University, he served for five years as chair of the Curriculum Committee, five years as chair of the Faculty Interests Council, and as Interim Executive Dean of the Brooklyn campus from 2017-2019.

Dr. Hanophy was elected a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS) in 2005, having served on the organization’s Board of Directors, as Association Secretary and a member of the Executive Committee from 2007 to 2013 and as editor of the association’s professional journal, The Science Teachers Bulletin, from 2013 to 2018.  He is also a member of the Center for the History of Microbiology/ Archives Committee of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and secretary of the Northeastern Microbiologists: Physiology, Ecology, and Taxonomy (NEMPET).

Scholarly & Professional Interests

Dr. Hanophy’s scholarly interests include antibiotic production and resistance, biofilm biology, and the history of microbiology. He has also published and given presentations in the area of biology and microbiology education.
