Joan E. Silver has been an associate professor in St. Joseph’s Department of Child Study since 1994. She also serves as the director of the M.A. in Childhood or Adolescence Special Education with an annotation in Severe or Multiple Disabilities program and teaches a number of graduate level courses. Dr. Silver sits on several College committees, including the Agenda Committee, Academic Development Committee and Assessment Advisory Committee, among others.
Before coming to SJC, Dr. Silver was an adjunct professor in the psychology department at Nassau Community College. From 1972 to 1992, she taught in several elementary and high schools as both a general education and special education teacher.
Throughout her career, Dr. Silver has given a number of presentations on topics relating to special education. She presented “Most Wanted: Collaborative Educators to Meet the Special Needs of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Exceptional Learners” to the International Association of Special Education in Alicante, Spain.
